..and I am dependent on the Internet. Today, I was working from home, when my Internet provider decides to replace some wiring to make things "faster". Keep in mind, they did not notify customers this was going to happen. Instead, I get my internet zapped off while on a VPN trying to do some work. For the rest of the afternoon, I made countless phone calls to try to stay in the loop and help others be my hands and eyes while awaiting the glorious return of the fruit of the earth.. I mean the Internet. So much info is stored out on some network instead of on a scrap of paper or a local hard drive.
What have I learned from this?
- Reliance on a totally networked system of information can be crippling when deprived of such an item.
- Never have all services by the same provider, otherwise, if 1 wire is cut, everything is gone. Thank goodness for a different phone provider!
- Always have data redundancy. It is not a waste of space. Keep that paper calendar and contacts in addition to the electronic one.
- Retrieve updated documents off the mothership (aka Source Control) server often. You never know when things might go down.
That is all for today. Mmmm...internet....
